Qube Buildings pioneering the way with fully sustainable modular building system after passing rigorous fire test with flying colours

It’s full steam ahead for Qube Buildings, pioneering the way in sustainable modular building systems with the revolutionary Bio-SIP™. Backed by the UK’s national innovation agency Innovate UK, and having won multiple grants for innovation, the Bio-SIP™ is made from natural fibres and recycled plastic, and is set to disrupt the future of modular construction, smashing the ceiling of what was once deemed unachievable.

Qube Buildings can confidently demonstrate development and adoption of resource efficient solutions in the advancement of technology and materials for the future, by bringing to market the Bio-SIP™.  The revolutionary building system recently passed stringent EN1365-1 Resistance to fire test, enduring over 50 minutes burning time at temperatures of nearby 1000C!

Bio-SIP™ sustainable modular building system

Bio-SIP™ sustainable modular building systems are unique in delivering complete structural integrity to the building, without the need for a timber or steel frame, and provide superior insulation using fully sustainable, ecologically friendly materials. Bio-SIP™ insulating core is engineered using ArmaPET® Eco50 solution from Armacell, which offers reliable lifetime insulation performance through a product that is made from 100% recycled material. ArmaPET Eco50, has recently obtained the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) through an independently verified party with the Global Warming Potential value of 23.2 kg CO2 eq/m³. Combined with its long-term stability is the best partner for Bio-SIP™ insulating core.

Organic materials such as flax or hemp fibre matting are combined with a bio-resin to form a strong and watertight skin, sandwiching the insulating PET core together. The Bio-SIP™ is finished with the addition of 12mm Magply MgO boards, which offer complete and necessary fire resistance to the overall building, improving structural performance and create a versatile substrate to paint, render or print onto.

These materials in conjunction with each other provide a far superior, high performance alternative to traditional SIP’s (For example when comparing the U-value of Bio-SIP™ to SIP’s on the market today, Bio-SIP™ offers a more favourable U-value of 0.10 with an overall wall build-up of just 310mm.

Qube Building’s Co Founder and Director, Justin Murray, said: ‘The Bio-SIP™ system offers unique innovation in sustainable modular building systems with unmatched thermal stability. Modular buildings built using the Bio-SIP™ system can also be dismantled and reassembled multiple times, extending their shelf-life and usage, unlike anything we’ve seen in the current market today.’

With sustainability as a driving force behind Qube Buildings, PassivHaus consultant Murray goes on to say: ‘The Bio-SIP™ conforms to the PassivHaus standard, something I have personally worked hard to achieve over recent years, and am excited for the future of Passive Housing and what Qube Buildings can offer.’

U-value, also known as thermal transmittance, is a measure of the rate at which heat transfers through a building material. It is used in the construction and building industry to quantify the thermal conductivity of a material. The U-value is expressed in watts per square meter per kelvin (W/(m²·K)). In simpler terms, the U-value indicates how effective a material is as an insulator. A lower U-value suggests that the material is a better insulator, meaning it allows less heat to pass through. Conversely, a higher U-value indicates a poorer insulator with higher heat conductivity.
